Polanyi's "The nice Transformation" could be a broad, sweeping work that encompasses history, sociology, economics and political science. MacIver writes that the book's specific relevance for a political scientist is that "it can facilitate him to restate recent problems and to judge recent doctrines" (xi). However, with the recent renaissance of liberal/classical economic doctrines (what Polanyi would scornfully decision the utopia of the "self-adjusting market") it appears that the problems restated and therefore the doctrines evaluated by Polanyi don't seem to be thus "old" in spite of everything. For this reason, the book has even a lot of relevance currently than it did for past readers, even simply twenty years once its publication, when the heyday of planned economics seemed to be effecting Polanyi's proposed remedies for the excesses of free marketism, and blunting the force of his critique as applied to post-transformation society. however within the era of WTO and NAFTA, a powerful case may be created that his critique has attained newfound relevance beyond even its original application.
