A terribly thorough review of Italian politics since unification

In this book, I got specifically what I wanted: an understanding of the actors, events, and movements in Italian political history beginning with unification within the mid-19th century. Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Crispi, Giolitti, Mussolini, De Gasperi. The author will a beautiful job of constructing these characters (and others) whereas conveying the changing political and societal backdrop within which they labored. an absence of tempocentrism and equal stress on the sooner periods were terribly positive in my read. Detailed explanations of the causes, mechanisms, and failures of Mussolini and fascism were particularly well done.
